CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Little boy, little boy,
Itâs all a big trick,
Run and hide,
Come to me quick.
I didnât get to go to school again when the week started. My dad got me up. Me and Mr. Ted got breakfast. My mum gave me my medicine. But I got sick before she gave it to me. My neck hurt inside again. I got too hot. My mum told me that I needed to stay at home.
I hugged Mr. Ted. We sat by the fire next to the chair. I didnât talked to my brother. I wasnât allowed to. But my mum did let me make Lego houses. She said I could do it as long as I didnât make a mess. âAnd make sure Iâm not finding those damn bricks all over the place, or Iâll put them out with the rubbish,â she said. So I looked after them.
I made a house and a police station. I made a fire station too. But the fire engine was lost. My brother had it in his room. I didnât want to go and get it. Maybe the bad man would be upstairs. I could pretend we had one. It didnât matter that it wasnât red. Or a fire engine. We just said it was.
When my Nan came to help my mum. She asked what we were doing. I told her I was making Lego for my brother. She asked why I wasnât going to school. I told her I wasnât well.
My Nan asked to look inside my mouth. I donât know what she was looking for. But she shouted my mum and told her to look too. My Nan said I should go and see the doctor.
My Nan called the doctors. She told them I was just five and that I was too hot. I didnât feel too hot. I felt too cold. I wanted some blankets. My Nan said I needed to get cool. But I was cold. I wished she believed me. It made my teeth shiver. I showed her, but she put a cloth on my head.
My dad had the car. We had to walk to the doctors. It was only a little bit near the house. My mum told me to sit on the floor in the waiting room. It was so boring. I had no toys. The books were boring too. They were full of boring things about houses and stuff. I wanted to go back home and play with the Lego.
My mum sat and talked to the lady next to her. I donât know what they talked about. Maybe it was old things. When the reception lady came out each time, I hoped that she was going to say my name. Then I could see the doctor. I wondered if he would give me a sticker. My brother got stickers when he went to the doctor. My mum said I couldnât get one.
Sometimes my brother got a lolly. It looked like a whistle, but it didnât make a very good noise.
